City Councilman Lew Fidler took a $1,000 donation from disgraced ex-state Sen. Carl Kruger in 2010, records show.
Our Reuven Blau reports:
Fidler accepted the “Friends of Carl” money to help fund his annual Democratic club dinner in May 2010 — a month before reports of Kruger’s criminal pay-to-play scheme surfaced.
The popular Brooklyn councilman announced Monday that he would run for Kruger’s seat, but took great pains to distance himself from the senator, who pleaded guilty in federal court last month.
Fidler said Kruger “violated the public trust in, quite frankly, despicable ways.”
Jenn Krinsky, a Fidler spokeswoman, said Kruger’s donation was made 11 months before the state senator was formally charged.
“There are no requirements to report such contributions,” Krinsky added. “Councilman Fidler, committed to openness and transparency, chose to go above and beyond and to report these contributions.”
The money was spent to fund the dinner and operational expenses at Fidler’s Democratic club.
