Senate looks to next power struggle in ‘12

ALBANY — November 2012 is nearly 16 months away, but members of the state Senate are already building war chests for a round of high-stakes elections.

Republicans reported raising $2.75 million over the past six months, leaving them with about as much on hand, said Deputy Majority Leader Tom Libous, who chairs the Senate Republican Campaign Committee. Democrats raised just over $1 million, Democratic Senate Campaign Committee Chairman Michael Gianaris said. He claimed it was a record for a minority party, but is slightly less than Senate Democrats raised amid a special election in 2007.
